What is Defensible Space?

Zone 0 is the area closest to your house. It should extend 0-5 feet from your house. Sometimes, Zone 0 is called the “Ember Resistant Zone.”
In Zone 0, you should:
- Use only metal or other non-combustible outdoor furniture.
- Use a heavy rubber mat or metal grates instead of a natural fiber or jute doormat.
- Move any combustible materials. This includes garbage and recycling containers, lumber, trash, or patio accessories.
**Don’t store any lumber or firewood within 30 feet of your house. Don’t keep any vegetation in Zone 0. - Clear away any fallen leaves or needles.
- Cut back all tree limbs that extend into Zone 0.
- Use stone or gravel instead of a combustible mulch.
Zone 1 should be the 30 feet immediately around your house.
In Zone 1, you should:
- Remove all dry or dead plants, grass, and weeds.
- Remove all dead vegetation and fallen leaves.
- Make sure to clean up your roof and gutters, in addition to your yard.
Zone 2 should start where Zone 1 ends. It should be 70 feet wide. Zones 1 and 2, combined, should total 100 feet.
In Zone 2, you should:
- Cut or mow grass to a maximum height of 4 inches.
- Keep all tree branches cut back correctly, in all Zones.
- Keep all tree branches cut to: 6 feet away from the ground; 10 feet away from your chimney; At least 6 feet away from your roof.
- Ensure there is sufficient horizontal and vertical space around all trees and shrubs.
- Space your trees and shrubs at least 10 feet apart. Remove any plants or shrubs from around the bases of trees. This makes it harder for fires to spread from a plant to a larger tree.
The Defensible Space Assistance Program (DSAP)
The Defensible Space Assistance Program (DSAP) is designed to assist homeowners who need to create defensible space but are unable to do so due to physical, economic, or other barriers. For example, low-income homeowners and individuals who are physically disabled or elderly may be unable to pay a contractor. It is imperative that all homeowners maintain at least 100 feet of defensible space around their homes to aid in protecting themselves and their communities from the devastation of wildfire.
Prior to receiving service through DSAP, you must participate in our Home Assessment Program.

HOME
Assessments
What is a Home Assessment?
A home assessment is a review of the vulnerability of a home and landscape to wildfire and ember ignition. During this assessment, a staff member will review defensible space and home hardening principles and make specific recommendations for improvements based on the current condition of your property.
Evaluations are performed by trained staff members and take about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. Our recommendations are based on local fire agency ordinances, but we are non-regulatory, and none of the recommendations are required for you to make. Upon completion of the assessment, you will receive recommendations, educational resources, and program referrals that can help you meet your wildfire resilience goals. Assessments and outcomes are completely confidential.
